Wifey for Life is special because we truly take our time to find, vet and feature speakers that are leaders in their industry and passionate about their craft. When I began planning this workshop I knew I wanted to include bridal fashion and also knew Megan was the perfect person to educate brides on their wedding day look. Megan not only knows fashion, she knows about the construction of a dress. I'm very excited to welcome her to Wifey for Life. Read on to learn more about Megan.

I am Megan Dumaine, the owner of the Wedding Embassy. I've owned the Wedding Embassy for almost 9 years now... Since I've had the shop the business has grown significantly, we now sell bridal gowns, bridesmaids, mothers, flower girls and offer tuxedo rental in a 3800 square foot re-purposed factory in Oakville. I blame my bridal shop ownership purely on Barbie, Disney, dance class and Madonna. Growing up I loved all things girly and pretty! I wanted to be a fashion designer; I used to watch figure skating and awards shows and soak in all the sparkle...I spent Sunday Mass and summer afternoons drawing dresses...LOTS of dresses! After a very academic high school career I went all in; moved to NYC, went to Pratt for fashion design and loved every minute of it! After jobs in vintage stores and stints as a pattern maker, and junior sportswear designer I decided to indulge what was then a just a hobby. I began designing custom wedding gowns and a short time later moved home, back to Waterbury, to buy the Wedding Embassy and sell bridal gowns.
Who or what do you look to for inspiration?
My original inspiration for how the shop "behaves" was my best friend Jolene and her bridal experience. We visited shops across the country and experienced different sales techniques and customer service... I absorbed it all and used those interactions to form our methods and customer service...I am always learning from experiences I have, whether it be the way I was greeted at Starbucks, how long my take-out took to arrive, how Anthropologies packs and ships their online orders…
What we sell is inspired by our brides, their themes and requests. We listen carefully, keep informed as to seasonal changes like colors and popular necklines and details… trends are always in the wind!
Why your business? Why should brides work with you?
My business was built on an educated shopping experience. With everything a Bride has to plan now and how detailed the whole process has become I thought it was immensely important that a bride know what she’s buying. She should be confident in the way she feels in a gown but also how it will function. I believe brides should work with a shop that gives them space to make theirs decision and comprehensive service throughout the process. My staff and seamstresses know our products and services very well and don’t fall back on pushy tactics; if they feel strongly a bride needs a specific alteration, has a limited time table, or should choose one silhouette over another they express it honestly and informatively rather than pushing. WE all enjoy the process of helping a bride fall in love and of course the exhilaration when she commits!
To you, what is the most important detail a couple should incorporate into their wedding day?
The clothes! Well, I should say that! Clothes are important, no matter the style or level of formality! It’s all about how you want to feel on your wedding day! Remember though, it may be for one day, but it’s one very important day that moves quickly, demands a lot, and stays with you forever. But really - really, professional vendors that you “click” with make a huge difference! Planning a wedding has become and overwhelming-personality-expressing-emotionally-integrated experience. Not only are brides expected to plan an event of a lifetime but they feel the pressure to do it in unique and expressive way! That’s a lot to accomplish and having a team of qualified professionals is helpful! Remember, as a bride or groom, you are doing this once - we do it ten’s or hundred’s of times a year. Really take the time to feel out your vendors and make sure you are confident in them. Once you pick them, trust them! Let them do their jobs so you can enjoy the process!
