We also produced made for TV movies and I worked on cross promotions there as well.
I started my business, DBP & Associates, Inc. in 1992 in Rye, NY, where my core business focus was in the development, sales and marketing of book, music, stationery and gift products to major retailers, direct mail and private label companies. I also had a children’s record and book label called Persnickety Press. I created our advertising specialty and premium business division Persnickety Promotions in 1997. In 2007 we entered into the event and bridal market with The Persnickety Bride. We have been in the bridal market now direct to consumer about 8 years now.
Who or what do you look to for inspiration?
I have been in business so long that I look for inspiration in just about everything. You have to in order to keep up with trends in what interests strike your customers fancy as well as your own. You can never let yourself get stale in dealing in the bridal or consumer products business. I find that in my promotional and the bridal business, my clients are always happy when I come up with something fresh and new that will surprise their staff or clients or in the instance with brides their guests in presenting stationery, favors or accessories that are just a little different – a little more special than the rest of what is out there.
You want your products (business, service) to inspire?
I want the products that I sell to be unique and special to that particular client. I am only in the wedding business because I have a passion for watching the joy on the faces of my clients. It’s a feeling you don’t get from major retail chains (believe me and we sell quite a few of them) – besides the vast majority of my clients are now friends on my personal Facebook page. I have a vested interest in watching their family grow and god only knows I love the referrals we get from our past couples.
Why your business? Why should brides work with you?
I honestly believe the testimonials of my past clients on Wedding Wire and The Knot pretty much tell it all. I am in this business for the joy it brings my couples and their families. Yes it is a business, but having several businesses and I am fortunate to be successful in all of them. That is thanks to great staff and suppliers. I enjoy being part of something different every time and new couple walks through my doors. There is a genuine gratitude from the couples and their families in helping them reach their event goals. The fact that we can do so much for them in a variety of areas does help make us a go to company. Lastly, I have to have a connection with the couple to work with them. My business is truly a collaborative effort. I work on mutual trust and a very old school mentality that all my clients big and small are important to me. So my couples get the same attention as my big chain store buyers.
To you, what is the most important detail a couple should incorporate into their wedding day?
Whatever is personal them and shows their unique style. What is it that makes them special together. Do they have a hobby or a theme that they want to represent at their wedding?
Is family very important? Do they want pictures of their parents and grandparents weddings there. Is their shared heritage or representing their mix heritage important to them?
Do they want a special poem or quote at every table? Do they create special artwork that brands their wedding? Perhaps some cool new family coat of arms.
It could be anything but it has to be a detail a little something that makes a statement about their new family and life together. It could be something whimsical or something that will touch the hearts of their guests . Whatever it is – it should make an impact that they and their loved ones will look back on and remember. Their day is all about them and their loved ones. That is what needs to be emphasized in all of their planning. Trends will come and trends will go – but staying true to oneself is what is important – especially on your wedding day!
