Our next Wifey for Life sponsor is truly a person that I genuinely know and enjoy working with. Christine of Chow Bella is one of the most kind and giving people that I have had the pleasure of getting to know. I first met Christine through a women's networking group I co-founded, WIM. Christine was a vendor at our very first event and has been my go to for cakes for all occasions since. This is her second time as a Wifey for Life sponsor, she will be providing her delicious cookies for all of our Wifeys to enjoy. Read on to learn more about Christine and Chow Bella.
Introduce yourself. Who you are, interesting facts about you and
My name is Christine Alvarado Judd and I am the proud owner of Chow Bella Cakes & Treats. My business is named after my 14 year old niece Isabella, who has spent her weekends for the last 3 years helping me bake and create. She is an amazing young lady. I could not ask for a better assistant.
I am the mother of 2 wonderful children; my daughter, Laura who is 22 and my son Christopher, who is 5. I am married to a wonderful man, Christopher, who has now become my delivery person on occasion.
I am a self-taught cake designer. I think I naturally have a talent for art and through the magic of You Tube and Pinterest I have learned some of the more technical skills of cake decorating.
What was the reason for starting your business?
My little business began as a love for baking. At Christmas I've always made friends and family cookie and candy baskets. As a child we always baked at Christmas and it is one of my fondest memories of my childhood.
When my son turned one I decided to make his cake myself. At the time I was obsessed with the show Ace of Cakes and figured that since I had watched so many episodes making his cake wouldn’t be too hard. I laugh about it now. The cake indeed was a challenge to make, but I was immediately hooked. I found a way to combine my love of cooking and my love for all things artsy-craftsy. After that, I started making cakes for friends and family and slowly I was being referred to other people. It has truly been a whirlwind of fortunate events and being introduced to wonderful people (like Lauren) who continue to help me realize my dream.
You want your products to inspire?
I want my cakes, cookies and treats to inspire others to go after their dreams. At 40 I am finally realizing my true passion in life. I love being able to take a customer’s vision and bring it to life. Seeing the look on someone’s face when I make a delivery is the best feeling.
What inspires you?
My family and friends inspire me. They have always encouraged me to go after any dream I have. When my husband tells me that a cake looks good I am happy. He is a man of little words, so when he takes the time to tell me that something is beautiful; I know I have done well.
How is your business different from the competition?
I think my business is different from the competition because I am always willing to work within anyone’s budget. The cake baking industry is very competitive and prices can be very costly.
We are all about being able to make a profit, but I want to be able to do it without leaving someone broke in the process. I never want to turn someone away because they cannot afford to spend tons of money. I give away at least 2 cakes a month randomly. I am always donating to some cause because I truly believe that even though I do not have much to give, there are others who need more than I do. Since, this is a part-time business I limit myself to how many orders I take in a week. I need to be able to spend as much time on each order so they are perfect.
